Path of Exile Item Upgrading

Upgrades to equipment provide an additional bonus to the item's base stats. This bonus is based on the upgrade component level and rarity.
Components
Upgrade components make your weapons and armour better. They can be found through destroying enemies, buying them from karma vendors, or finding them in the form of item-spheres. You can also get them from equipment containing the components, or by utilizing high-tier salvage kits such as Black Lion Salvage Kit and Ascended Salvage Tool. Unlike most other items, upgrade components are not destroyed when removed from an item.
Upgrade components are mostly used to upgrade an item, but they can also be used for other purposes. They can be stacked to increase the level or the amount of experience gained by upgrading equipment or weapons. They can be forged to give extra bonuses. Sets
